IRD automated voice messages
IRD may call if you have overdue tax and/or late Income Tax returns
If you have overdue tax or are behind with an Income Tax return you may have received a pre-recorded automated voice message from the Inland Revenue Department (IRD).
On 10 and 17 March 2026, IRD contacted about 2,000 customers who had overdue tax of over $100, or one overdue Income Tax return.
The taxes involved were:
GST
Income tax
Employer payments
IRD are continuing this type of contact so if you haven’t already heard from IRD, and have overdue tax or an overdue Income Tax return, they may be in touch with you shortly.
If IRD calls, how do you know it isn’t a scam?
The caller ID will show as Inland Revenue and the number 0800 951 758 will display on your phone.
The message will remind you to pay your tax or file your return. It will also give you ways to contact IRD.
If you receive a call from IRD you can contact IRD on 0800 951 758 or contact Chester Grey to discuss bringing your returns update or paying your overdue tax.
